How Can WordPress Improve My Website?
As a small business owner, you may have a website already. It’s pretty much a basic component of a company nowadays. However, too many sites have outdated or cheaply built websites that won’t hold up in the future. Most of these are usually built in static, unchanging HTML, which is very clunky compared to content management systems, or a “drag and drop” website builder like Wix.
Instead of delaying the inevitable long enough to be completely unable to catch up to your competition, here’s why you should use WordPress for your business website right away.
Ease of Use
Do you have trouble updating your site? Better yet, can you update your site at all, without calling your web developer?
Static HTML websites are written manually, so any change has to be carefully performed by a programmer. This can turn out well for the developer, but not for you.
Wouldn’t it be easier to update small details yourself? It doesn’t take much knowledge of WordPress to be able to update pages and posts. This is one of the main reasons why WordPress is so popular.
WordPress also updates very frequently, improving security and adding more features.
Contact forms. Social media sharing. Live chat. These are just some of the business-enhancing features you can add to a WordPress site, with just a few clicks.
A plugin is a piece of software that adds a specific feature to a website, and using WordPress gives you access to thousands of them.
A small business website may not need to be loaded with features, but plugins make it easy to add them whenever you want. This allows you to have any kind of website you want, from an online store to a membership site.
Outside of plugins, WordPress also lets you customize the look of a site with its built in Customizer, which is incredibly easy to use. Considering that there are also thousands of themes available, this means you have unlimited design choices.
With the rise of smartphones, it’s getting more and more important to have a site that can accommodate mobile users. If your site doesn’t look or perform well on a mobile device, visitors will leave, and Google will penalize it to no end.
A custom made HTML website can certainly be made mobile-friendly, but this takes a lot of work and increases your development cost.
Most WordPress themes, and indeed, WordPress itself, are mobile-friendly to start with, so it’s not even a worry. Just download a theme and customize it. The site will automatically change itself on a mobile device, making it way easier for users to navigate it.
…and SEO Friendly
If your website isn’t optimized to be easily readable to search engines, it won’t be found at all, either by readers or potential customers.
This is a major problem for many small business websites, since they use “drag and drop” website builders like Wix, Godaddy, and Vistaprint. I’ll admit these programs make it incredibly easy to build a website, but the truth is such extreme easiness comes at a price.
While these website builders don’t hold a candle to WordPress visually, they also just plain suck at SEO. Wix in particular is horrible for SEO, and using it can be a bad idea, especially if competition is high in your local market. Godaddy and Vistaprint are just as bad.
On the other hand, WordPress is recommended by Google itself, because of how easy it is to read and crawl. WordPress themes are built with SEO in mind, and plugins like All in One SEO and Yoast make setting it up a snap. If you’re looking to reach the first page of Google search results, WordPress is your best choice.
Usually, being popular isn’t an indicator of a website’s success. But WordPress powers 27% of the internet, which covers millions of sites. It wouldn’t be that widespread if it wasn’t all it was cracked up to be.
This popularity also means there’s a huge community of users and developers working to provide technical support and guidance. Basically, you can solve almost any problem you have.
Are You Ready for a Redesign?
Is your website written in static HTML? Or did you build it yourself in WIx or Godaddy? Those are two extremes of developer involvement, and both are less than perfect.
Designing your site in WordPress would still require a professional designer, but afterwords you’re able to maintain your site with little trouble. You get the easiness of Wix (sorta), and the solid coding static HTML is known for.
If you decide to move to WordPress, great! WordPress is extremely easy to install, and is completely free and available on almost all hosts. Your webmaster should be able to switch you over quick.
Don’t Have a Web Designer?
Did you use Wix/Godaddy/Vistaprint/etc to build your site? In that case, you may not have anyone helping you on your site. You can totally learn WordPress yourself, but if you’re a business owner, you’ll probably be too busy to do that. In that case, it’s a good idea to hire a web designer.
